Activities
As a convenor, we bring together development cooperation providers (donors),
partner country governments and CSOs to engage in open and inclusive dialogue
to find common ground. As a knowledge broker, we raise awareness on
international commitments on CSOs in development and offer guidance,
evidence and practical tools to further their implementation.
July 2019 - August 2019
Task Team Studies Methodology Workshop
The new phase of Task Team Studies will focus on “What factors in a country’s environment help or hinder the effective CSO participation in SDG-related processes and how is this practically felt/experienced”. The studies will involve research in 6 countries including: Ghana, Tanzania, Hungary, Nepal, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Costa Rica, and will be conducted under the guidance of Alan Fowler (emeritus professor at ISS) and Kees Biekart (Associate Professor at ISS).
Phase I of the study – April to June 2019 – involved a guided scoping exercise to: (i) establish what are country conditions for implementing the SDGs, specifically with respect to civil society organisations’ engagement; and (ii) identify potential case studies for their relevance to answering the overarching research question. Phase II of the Task Team studies kicked off with a methodology workshop on 31 July – 2 August at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague. Phase II will span July to December 2019, followed by Phase III – synthesis report – from January to March 2020.
Workshop Objective
The Methodology Workshop brought together the 6 country level researchers from Ghana, Tanzania, Costa Rica, Laos, Nepal, and Hungary, as well as the two principle researchers; Professors Alan Fowler and Kees Biekart. Jacqueline Wood from the Task Team Secretariat participated through Skype to provide input from a policy angle. The workshop was intended to discuss key findings from the scoping exercise under Phase I; create a common understanding of the research rationale, methods and tasks; as well as identify case studies for the in-depth country level research under Phase II. Throughout, attention was given to country differences in terms of civic space, as an important criterion for inclusion.
