Activities
As a convenor, we bring together development cooperation providers (donors),
partner country governments and CSOs to engage in open and inclusive dialogue
to find common ground. As a knowledge broker, we raise awareness on
international commitments on CSOs in development and offer guidance,
evidence and practical tools to further their implementation.
17 July 2019
HLPF 2019 Side-event
The 2019 High Level Political Forum (HLPF), with the theme empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality, took place 9-18 July 2019 in New York. Both SDG 16 (on peaceful, just and inclusive societies) and SDG 17 (which includes multi-stakeholder partnerships) were subject to an in-depth review. The Task Team organised a side event during the HLPF at the Permanent Mission of Ireland to the United Nations in New York. The side event was titled; “SDG 17 – The Forgotten SDG? How partnerships with Civil Society Organisations advance SDG implementation.” More information about the session is available below.
Background
The Task Team engages with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) because of their relevance to the Task Team’s work (link to about us). CSOs are expected to play a critical role in the SDGs, both as implementers and as watchdogs for accountability. Every year, progress in the realization of the SDGs is reviewed at global level at the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York. The theme of the 2019 HLPF is empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality. The SDGs that will be subjected to an in-depth review are: SDG 4 (education and lifelong learning), 8 (sustainable economic growth and decent work for all), 10 (reduced inequality), 13 (climate change), 16 (peaceful, just and inclusive societies) and 17 (means of implementation).
Side-event "SDG 17 - The Forgotten SDG?"
During the 2019 High Level Political Forum, Ireland, as donor Co-chair of the Task Team co-hosted a side event together with Kenya, Sweden, Uganda, the OECD and the CPDE. The side event celebrated SDG 17 (Partnerships for Development).
SDG 17 is an important overarching goal that emphasizes the whole-of-society approach needed to implement all other SDGs. All stakeholders, including civil society organizations (CSOs), need to work together in meaningful and effective partnerships in pursuit of a world where no one is left behind. Considerable stock has been placed on multi-stakeholder partnerships as means to progress towards realization of the SDGs. However, various countries have reported that they experience challenges in facilitating and consolidating meaningful multi-stakeholder engagement, including with CSOs.
This event provided for a strategic opportunity to present key insights on effective CSO participation in development processes, towards the realization of the SDGs. Speakers representing different stakeholder groups presented their reflections on the progress made on CSO development effectiveness and an enabling environment, as well as key findings on what is needed at the country-level to make inclusive CSO approaches a success. In this way, the event provided for a forum of meaningful reflection and knowledge-sharing on meeting the challenge of delivering the SDGs at national level over the next decade.
